The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever
— Jacques Yves Cousteau

100% Handmade

Welcome to fieldfinding ceramics. All of my products are made entirely by hand, and therefore, one of a kind. I work with porcelain that is fired to cone 10 in a reduction atmosphere. This yields a vitreous product but also lends itself to a specific density and particular finished feel that is unique to this process.

Please use your fieldfinding ceramics! All products are microwave and dishwasher safe and finished with food-safe glazes (unless otherwise noted). But as with anything hand made, a little extra love goes a long way. Enjoy!

About

fieldfinding represents the work of Wendy Scofield.

I am a mom (always), ceramic artist (mostly), gatherer (forever), but have also been known as a creative director, graphic designer, photo stylist.

My work explores the intersection of clean functional shapes that illuminate the natural texture and characteristics of porcelain. My background as a graphic designer is seen in the restrained approach to surface decoration, while letting the forms and materials speak for themselves, as they interact with the space around them.

I am a member the Midwest Clay Guild in Evanston, IL where I share a studio space with an amazing group of talented artists.

The Inspiration

The natural world around me is a constant source of inspiration. My current work is inspired by the environs of coastal New England, where I grew up. Porcelain is reminiscent of the sun and salt leached shells that have captivated me as they return to nature. The choices I make about how to finish a piece, whether to leave it natural, burnish it to a smooth velvety finish or to glaze it, also harken back to the various textures found in nature. Finally, the color palettes derive from the atmospheric changes familiar to the coast.
